Housing for the future when the climate is constantly changing along with increase in sea levels and ever-increasing population.
The following is basically an abstract I submitted at a Paper Presentation Competition at AISSMS College of Engineering, Pune.
History
History
The world is always engulfed with disasters and calamities that have made people homeless and void of basic requirements. Housing and lifestyle of people are drastically changed. The examples of Tsunami in Japan and Indian South-Eastern Peninsula have made it essential to have houses that are safe from floods and are capable to provide shelter to people even in times of crisis. The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami which was a third-largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph which caused a lot of destruction of life and property.
Storms are another centre of problems which need to be dealt straight away history has witnessed a number of incidents: In the United States, major hurricanes comprise just 21% of all landfalling tropical cyclones, but account for 83% of all damage. Tropical cyclones often knock out power to tens or hundreds of thousands of people, preventing vital communication and hampering rescue efforts. Tropical cyclones often destroy key bridges, overpasses, and roads, complicating efforts to transport food, clean water, and medicine to the areas that need it. Furthermore, the damage caused by tropical cyclones to buildings and dwellings can result in economic damage to a region and to a diaspora of the population of the region.
Ideology
Human design are far fragile to stand against nature to a large extent but when it comes to working with nature or maneuver it in a safe direction then our models can stand to it a bit.
In places where water is a problem, we can use it as to solve our problem by making houses that can float.
Working With Nature and Not Against it!
Forces of nature
Sun, wind, and water are the basic components of nature that allow existence of life on earth yet in certain cases these forces can prove to brutal enough to ruin civilizations. Storms, Floods, and Earthquakes are the faces of nature that depict it destructive power.
Wind
The power of winds is unchallengeable, even the tallest structure build on the earth vibrates under the effect of wind. Winds in open fields acquire speeds enough to scratch off a building to its base. To deal with such conditions various aerodynamic designs for buildings and structures are made that are able to provide a pathway to wind under the influence of a tornado or hurricanes. American Architect Ted Givens have released some models that are aerodynamic and remain safe even when the entire location is struck by a tornado.
The designs include a structure that can move in and out that is lower its height by getting into the ground like a turtle.
Water
It is said that life originated from water and it is a very important element of life without which life won’t exist. There are many incidents where another side of the water is seen that is floods. Floods occur all around the globe due to a number of reasons like excessive rainfalls, change in tides and rise in sea-levels. In regions which are very low in comparison to the sea level water is a great problem and there is a great change of the region getting submerged into water. Architect Koen Olthuis, Netherlands have designed floating structures that can float on water. In Netherlands a township based on the float principle where water is considered the solution instead of treating it as a problem. The float structures can provide a lot of space as the major part of the earth is covered with water and if this float building concept is utilized then the problem of space can be answered. The buildings can float so the problem of getting submerged is eliminated.

The following terms are taken into consideration Annual Maintenance, Mechanical and Hydraulic Planning and Housing of Occupants.
Advantages
Flood-prone areas can become much safe if such concepts are used the problem of houses getting blown away can be addressed
Disadvantages
Cost may be prohibitive. Additional costs are likely if the structure must be brought into compliance with current code requirements for plumbing, electrical and energy systems also the mechanical equipment maintenance is a difficult task.
Limitations
The designs use materials that are very costly and their maintenance is a difficult task.
Conclusions
This process can be of many benefits for our country where the climate is diverse and unpredictable. This requires great planning and efforts. There is a lot of investment involved in this process but once the process is successful it can be very useful. The areas which are flood prone can become the settlement of future.
